Compressed
audio solutions include ST's MP3 decoder chips which provide MP3
player functions to existing consumer products like mobile phones.
Such devices transform the mobile phone from a simple communication
tool to a portable entertainment platform.
A new range of MP3 consumer stereo products offer reliability
advantages because they do not include any moving parts. These
MP3 players store music in compressed digital format in Flash
memory chips. Music can be downloaded into the player from a personal
computer or a dedicated download unit, so that the same Flash
memory is used all the time.
Based on a VLIW DSP core specially optimized for audio applications,
the integrated MP3 decoders add voice recording/playback capabilities
to personal players, with extremely low power consumption, typically
85 mW at 2.4 V. Delivered in compact SO28, TQFP44 and BGA8x8 packages,
MP3 chipsets decode a 320 Kbits/s bit stream. |

mp3PRO Audio Technology
To improve the sound quality of mp3 at lower bit rates,
Coding Technologies has developed an enhancement technology called
"Spectral Band Replication" (SBR), that gives back the
sound the high frequency components. Combining mp3 with the SBR
generates an audio signal with high bandwidth at low bit rates resulting
in mp3PRO audio format. Read
