The Smartcard SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) for GSM applications consists of a dedicated microcontroller, various embedded memory blocks and I/O integrated into a single chip, with its associated software.
This chip or system-on-chip is required to:
  Support secure key storage and exection of authentication algorithms in order to identify the user, over the network
  Store data for various services such as abbreviated number dialing (AND) and short messages (SMS)
